Florida Healthy Kids Reminds Parents to Prevent Cavities in Kids

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Center for Pediatric Dentistry estimates that 40 percent of American children have a cavity before they enter kindergarten, but February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, which offers Florida families a timely reminder to stay ahead of dental decay by scheduling regular dental treatments. To help change this staggering statistic, the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation (FHKC) is getting active to encourage better dental habits in Florida.

Florida Healthy Kids Corporation CEO Rebecca Matthews said, “Having healthy teeth encourages confidence in kids, and setting healthy dental habits at a young age puts kids on a path toward bright smiles for life. Our comprehensive and affordable Florida KidCare insurance coverage includes dental benefits, another reason why all Florida parents should consider visiting FloridaKidCare.org today to apply.”

Nearly five percent of Florida high-schoolers have never been to the dentist, according to the Florida Department of Health’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a figure that has grown higher in recent years. Children with dental health problems are more likely to miss school, have lower GPAs and decreased self-confidence.

Florida Healthy Kids Corporation Board Member and pediatric dentist Dr. Peter Claussen recommends six simple dental health tips to prevent dental problems:

  • Take your child to the dentist by their first birthday or after they cut their first tooth – whichever comes first.
  • Regular check-ups are crucial: Schedule cleanings every six months to stay ahead of dental decay.
  • Ask your pediatric dentist about sealants, a quick, easy and painless way to prevent cavities for up to four years.
  • Brushing alone won’t cut it. Start flossing early and often to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Safety is key when playing sports. Proper protective mouth guards should be worn to prevent injuries.
  • Secure dental insurance. Keep kids smiling by protecting them with proper dental insurance coverage.
