TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA - According to the Florida Health Insurance Survey, there are almost 120,000 children statewide who would be eligible for the Healthy Kids program but are not enrolled.

Healthy Kids, a component of Florida KidCare, provides comprehensive medical coverage to school-aged children of working parents who otherwise could not afford health insurance. The program is a public-private initiative funded with a combination of federal, state and local funds and participants' monthly premiums. Most enrolled families pay $15/month per family for benefits including doctors' office visits, inpatient hospital care, prescriptions, eyeglasses, immunizations and much more.

As of July 2001, Healthy Kids has enrolled over 200,000 children in its program. This is an increase of over 50,000 children from one year ago.

"Although Healthy Kids has been in existence for over ten years, there are still many Florida families who are unaware of the benefits this program can provide to their children," said Treasurer and Insurance Commissioner, Tom Gallagher, Chairman of the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation. "It is imperative that we continue to reach out to parents whose greatest need may be health insurance coverage for their children."

In an effort to reach out to these families, Healthy Kids is releasing applications for the program to each child in the Florida school system. A statewide staggered distribution of applications will begin on August 20th

Parents interested in receiving an application or learning more about the Healthy Kids program may call toll free at 1-888-FLA-KIDS or visit their website at www.healthykids.org. The single page application is available in English, Spanish and Creole.
